One of my assignments at work is to coordinate recruiting for IBM at the ACM ICPC, mostly in the US, but we recruit from the World Finals for IBM globally. Senate approves Solis 80-17, and of course Texas Senator John Cornyn votes with the minority. Wrong again John!
One of the final members of President Obama’s Cabinet, his nominee for Labor Secretary, was confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday by a vote of 80 to 17.
Hilda Solis will take over the reins of the Labor Department at a time of great challenges and optimism within the labor community. Her nomination represents a major victory for labor unions, which had hailed her candidacy as a boon for their legislative priorities — specifically the Employee Free Choice Act. It also represents a win for the Obama administration, which had watched as Republicans in the Senate held up the nomination over opposition to Solis’ position on EFCA and revelations that her husband had not paid taxes on a business he owned some time ago.

According to the new Malkin math and calendar Obama has been in office for months, and so she calculates a 2000 point drop in the DJIA as being attributable to the Obama presidency.
The Zilker Park Kite Festival is coming up on Sunday March 1st… We went last year and enjoyed seeing all the kites. We picked up a new kite in Shanghai while we were in China in May to fly at the festival this year.

In the midst of an economic crisis caused largely by Wall Street greed, our senator skipped this week’s vote on the stimulus plan so he could meet with Republican donors from Wall Street.
He showed us that congressional Republicans aren’t fighting for their constituents who got laid off or watched their retirement savings disappear or lost their health coverage. They’re just looking out for their big-money corporate friends.

I was in the DD on Research this morning, and there was a new number on the whiteboard, just like the last time I was in there, but this time for Lakeway. So, after I got back, I checked it out, and sure enough, there’s a Dunkin’ Donuts in Lakeway now too. The Franchisee has a web site that lists their locations in Texas, including the three in the Austin market.

California Supreme Court to Hear Oral Arguments
in Prop 8 Legal Challenge on March 5
The California Supreme Court announced today that it will hear oral arguments on Thursday, March 5, 2009 in the Proposition 8 legal challenge.
On November 19, 2008, the California Supreme Court agreed to hear the legal challenges to Proposition 8 and set an expedited schedule. Briefing in the case was completed on January 21, 2009.
The California Supreme Court must issue its decisions within 90 days of oral argument.
