Spitzer introduces marriage equality bill in New York state.

PROPOSED LEGISLATION WOULD CREATE CIVIL MARRIAGE EQUALITY

Governor Eliot Spitzer and Lieutenant Governor David Paterson today submitted legislation to create civil marriage equality for all New Yorkers. This historic legislation would establish equal responsibilities, recognition, benefits and protections for all married couples. The bill would additionally stipulate that no clergy member or religious institution should be compelled to perform any same-sex marriage ceremony.

Under current law, partners unable to enter into a civil marriage — and their children — lack legal protections taken for granted by married couples. In such areas as property ownership, inheritance, health care, hospital visitation, taxation, insurance coverage, child custody and pension benefits, married couples receive important safeguards against the loss or injury of a spouse, and crucial insurance against legal intrusion into marital privacy.

“This legislation would create equal legal protection and responsibilities for all individuals who seek to marry or have their marriage protected in the State of New York,” said Governor Spitzer. “Strong, stable families are the cornerstones of our society. The responsibilities inherent in the institution of marriage benefit those individuals and society as a whole.”

“This bill guarantees that the inalienable right to the pursuit of happiness will be protected equally for all individuals in the State of New York,” said Lieutenant Governor David Paterson. “This is an important step in the fight for civil rights for all people.”

Bomb found in Texas abortion clinic parking lot
Police safely detonate explosive device; area providers urged to be vigilant

Updated: 2:03 a.m. CT April 27, 2007

AUSTIN, Texas – A bomb was left in a duffel bag in the parking lot of a clinic where abortions are performed, but a bomb squad safely detonated it.

An employee found the package Wednesday in the parking lot of the Austin Women’s Health Center, authorities said. The immediate area, including nearby Interstate 35, was evacuated briefly.

The device “was configured in such a way to cause serious bodily injury or death,” said David Carter, assistant chief of the Austin Police Department.

HART’S LOCATION, N.H. — The champagne is on ice at the Notchland Inn on Route 302. Proprietors and longtime partners Ed and Les are ready to raise their glasses to New Hampshire later today, when the state is set to pass a broad civil union bill granting gay and lesbian couples virtually all the same legal rights as married heterosexuals.

Supporters and opponents of the measure agree that it will be approved, and last week Gov. John Lynch, a moderate Democrat, said he will sign it. When he does, it will make New England the first region to have every state granting a measure of legal rights to same-sex couples. Even as the bulk of the country has passed constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage and civil unions, New England has stubbornly gone its own way.

Isn’t it ironic that New England, the home of Puritanism, would be the most progressive region of the country when it comes to marriage equality?

Spitzer Plans to Introduce Gay Marriage Bill

By NICHOLAS CONFESSORE
Published: April 23, 2007

Gov. Eliot Spitzer will introduce a bill in the coming weeks to legalize same-sex marriage in New York, his spokeswoman said Friday, a move that would propel New York to the forefront of one of the most contentious issues in politics.

Though he has long voiced support for same-sex marriage and promised during his campaign last year to introduce legislation to legalize it, Mr. Spitzer did not mention the issue in his State of the State speech in January or in remarks a week ago outlining his priorities for the remainder of the legislative session, which ends June 21.

But the spokeswoman, Christine Anderson, said that Mr. Spitzer would not back away from his campaign pledge.

“The governor made a commitment to advance a program bill, and he will fulfill that commitment during this legislative session,” Ms. Anderson said, using the term that refers to legislation introduced directly by the governor rather than through a state agency or by the Legislature.

A colleague of mine at IBM in the LGBT community recently started blogging, so of course I have to share a little link love. Sarah and I chatted on the phone early one morning last week about tools for bloggers, and joining the conversation in the blogoshpere. Oh, and I guess I should correct myself when I refer to the gay community, it seems that LGBT is the preferred acronym over GLBT.

No, I’m not talking about George Bush, Karl Rove or any other Republicans, at least not in this post. My weight is down 20 lbs since we started going to the gym in November 2005. That and a reduced fat diet helps, I guess.

We took our dogs and met up with Ann and Mike and their dogs to go to the Mighty Texas Dog Walk this morning. The day started off a little chilly, but warmed up nicely as we were walking. Have to say that we do love the HEB booth at the dog walk, and all the really friendly folks there who hooked us up with lots of doggie snacks! We finished off with lunch at Which Wich on the way home. I posted all of Nhut’s pictures in the gallery.

(Hartford, Connecticut) A bill to legalize same-sex marriage is headed to a vote in the Connecticut House of Representatives, but if the measure passes both houses it is likely to suffer the same fate as similar legislation in California – a veto.

The Judiciary Committee voted 26 – 15 Thursday to send the bill to the floor of the House for a vote.

The US Attorney firing thing gets curiouser and curiouser as more information about it comes to light. Check out this article in the Boston Globe:

Scandal puts spotlight on Christian law school
Grads influential in Justice Dept.

By Charlie Savage, Globe Staff | April 8, 2007

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The title of the course was Constitutional Law, but the subject was sin. Before any casebooks were opened, a student led his classmates in a 10-minute devotional talk, completed with “amens,” about the need to preserve their Christian values.

“Sin is so appealing because it’s easy and because it’s fun,” the law student warned.

Regent University School of Law, founded by televangelist Pat Robertson to provide “Christian leadership to change the world,” has worked hard in its two-decade history to upgrade its reputation, fighting past years when a majority of its graduates couldn’t pass the bar exam and leading up to recent victories over Ivy League teams in national law student competitions.

But even in its darker days, Regent has had no better friend than the Bush administration. Graduates of the law school have been among the most influential of the more than 150 Regent University alumni hired to federal government positions since President Bush took office in 2001, according to a university website.

One of those graduates is Monica Goodling , the former top aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales who is at the center of the storm over the firing of US attorneys. Goodling, who resigned on Friday, has become the face of Regent overnight — and drawn a harsh spotlight to the administration’s hiring of officials educated at smaller, conservative schools with sometimes marginal academic reputations.

Documents show that Goodling, who has asserted her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination to avoid testifying before Congress, was one of a handful of officials overseeing the firings. She helped install Timothy Griffin , the Karl Rove aide and her former boss at the Republican National Committee, as a replacement US attorney in Arkansas.

Because Goodling graduated from Regent in 1999 and has scant prosecutorial experience, her qualifications to evaluate the performance of US attorneys have come under fire. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, asked at a hearing: “Should we be concerned with the experience level of the people who are making these highly significant decisions?”

And across the political blogosphere, critics have held up Goodling, who declined to be interviewed, as a prime example of the Bush administration subordinating ability to politics in hiring decisions.

“It used to be that high-level DOJ jobs were generally reserved for the best of the legal profession,” wrote a contributor to The New Republic website . “. . . That a recent graduate of one of the very worst (and sketchiest) law schools with virtually no relevant experience could ascend to this position is a sure sign that there is something seriously wrong at the DOJ.”

From Campaign to Defend the Constitution (defconamerica.org)

The recent scandal surrounding the Justice Department’s firing of several US attorneys has inadvertently revealed the dangerous influence the religious right wields over the current administration. While the media is focused on the political firings of these attorneys, the connection between the administration and Pat Robertson’s Regent University — which has seen over 150 graduates hired by the Bush administration in recent years — is a more worrisome reality.

In today’s New York Times, Paul Krugman acknowledges the danger the religious right poses to our nation. Krugman exposes how these “extremists” have long sought to merge their ideology with government policy, a reality that we understand all too well. He also points out just how little attention this serious threat to democracy has received from mainstream media:

“The infiltration of the federal government by large numbers of people seeking to impose a religious agenda — which is very different from simply being people of faith — is one of the most important stories of the last six years. It’s also a story that tends to go underreported, perhaps because journalists are afraid of sounding like conspiracy theorists. But this conspiracy is no theory”.

DefCon was founded to fight this influence and restore our nation’s commitment to freedom, science, and progress — not theocracy. Revelations like those shown by this scandal not only reveal the seriousness of this threat but more importantly how critical our campaign remains.

Today, CREW issued a new report, WITHOUT A TRACE: The Missing White House Emails and Violations of the PRA, and made the shocking new disclosure that the Bush White House has lost over FIVE MILLION e-mails in a two year period. The report also details the legal issues behind the growing controversy over the White House e-mail scandal.

Through two confidential sources, CREW learned that the Executive Office of the President (EOP) has lost over FIVE MILLION emails generated between March 2003 and October 2005.

Bush aides’ use of GOP e-mail probed

Is this like using gmail for company business?

By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer Wed Apr 11, 6:50 PM ET

WASHINGTON – The White House said Wednesday it had mishandled Republican Party-sponsored e-mail accounts used by nearly two dozen presidential aides, resulting in the loss of an undetermined number of e-mails concerning official White House business. (what does this delete button do?) wtf

Congressional investigators looking into the administration’s firing of eight federal prosecutors already had the nongovernmental e-mail accounts in their sights because some White House aides used them to help plan the U.S. attorneys’ ouster. Democrats were questioning whether the use of the GOP-provided e-mail accounts was proof that the firings were political.

Democrats also have been asking if White House officials are purposely conducting sensitive official presidential business via nongovernmental accounts to get around a law requiring preservation — and eventual disclosure — of presidential records. The announcement of the lost e-mails — a rare admission of error from the Bush White House at a delicate time for the administration’s relations with Democratically controlled Capitol Hill — gave new fodder for inquiry on this front.

“This sounds like the administration’s version of the dog ate my homework,” said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. “I am deeply disturbed that just when this administration is finally subjected to meaningful oversight, it cannot produce the necessary information.”

Update: Obama, Clinton to skip Fox-backed debate

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will not participate in a Democratic debate co-hosted by Fox News Channel this fall, campaign aides indicated Monday.

The decision by the two Democratic presidential candidates follows an announcement last week by John Edwards, another White House contender, that he would forgo the Fox event.

The Sept. 23 debate, set for Detroit, is co-sponsored by the cable news network and by the Congressional Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute.

Disney opens Fairy Tale Weddings to gay couples

Posted by Stevious in General, General, Ge... | 04.06.2007 - 9:29 am

By Gina Keating

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The Walt Disney Co. has changed its policy to allow same-sex couples to participate in a popular Fairy Tale Wedding program it runs mainly at its two U.S. resorts and cruise line, a Disney spokesman said on Thursday.

Disney previously had allowed gay couples to organize their own weddings or commitment ceremonies at rented meeting rooms at the resorts, but had barred them from purchasing its Fairy Tale Wedding package and holding the event at locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World that are set aside specifically for weddings.

“We are updating our Fairy Tale Wedding guidelines to include commitment ceremonies,” Disney Parks and Resorts spokesman Donn Walker said. “This is consistent with our policy of creating a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment for all of our guests.”

Walker said the change was prompted by “an inquiry from a guest that asked about this service.”

Annual H-1B visa cap met–already

Posted by Stevious in General, General, Ge... | 04.04.2007 - 8:31 am

This was on slashdot this morning, and points to a CNET workplace blog article. The question comes up a lot on campus, about securing jobs for international students. One of the main advantages of the H1B visa for international students, is that it is a ‘dual intent’ visa which means that you can apply for a Green Card (Legal Permanent Residency). Anyway, with the demand for H1B visas being this high, and the cap being set fairly low, it makes it really difficult for international students to qualify for H1B visa sponsorship.

Family Research Council lies to members about hate crimes amendment, fails to disclose conflict of interest

WASHINGTON— The Family Research Council bore false witness against its neighbors at least twice this Holy Week when communicating with its members about the need for hate crimes legislation, said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.

In an attempt to scare its members into believing that federal hate crimes laws will punish simple thoughts, the FRC asks in a new Web video (www.stopthoughtcrimes.com), “What will it mean in America if thought crimes laws are passed?” The assertion that America doesn’t already have a federal hate crimes law is a flat out lie. The federal hate crimes law (18 U.S.C. section 245), covering race, religion, color and national origin, has been on the books since 1969.

“It’s easy to understand why the Family Research Council would feel the need to lie about the hate crimes law’s existence. The existing federal hate crimes law already covers the employees of the FRC under its “religion” provision,” said Solmonese. “That means the FRC is either against granting others the same protections it has already enjoyed for almost forty years under current federal law or it wants to repeal the existing hate crime law. Talk about special rights.”
